Overview
One of the most important parts of your webhosting services is your nameservers.
But what are they, and how to they affect your services?
While we cannot dig too deep into the mechanics of domain name resolution, this guide will help you understand how your nameservers affect your services.
What are Nameservers
Your nameservers contain your domain’s DNS records that direct visitors to your website and emails into your mailboxes, as well as several other services.
You can find more information on DNS here.
Your nameservers are set and managed by your domain registrar.
- If your domain is registered with us, your nameservers are set to our nameservers by default, but can be updated in your client area. Check here for information on how you update your nameservers.
- If your domain is registered elsewhere, you would need to contact them to manage your nameservers.
Why would I need to update my Nameservers?
In most cases, you do not ever need to update your nameservers. Using our nameservers in beneficial if you are using our services because it allows us to update your DNS if necessary.
However, if you are using a third party for hosting or other services, you may need to update them to your new provider’s nameservers. Your new host should provide you with the new nameservers.
How to Update your Nameservers
You can easily update your nameservers from your client area.
If you don’t know how to access your client area, you can find out here.
- Once logged into your Client Area , click on the domains section
You should now be at the My Domains page.
Select the domain you wish to update by clicking on the row. You can click anywhere on the box, except the domain name (this will take you to the domain’s website).
Click on Nameservers from the Manage menu, located on the left hand side of the screen
Once you reach the Nameservers page, you can choose between using our default name servers or you can enter your own third party name servers.
Once entered, click the Change Nameservers button to update the nameservers.
Important note regarding Nameserver updates
Any time you make changes to your DNS or Nameservers, it can take up to 24 hours for the changes to fully propagate. While most modern servers will update within 4-6 hours, it can still take up to 24 hours for it to be fully propagated world wide.
